As Tandem’s Director of Careplanning, Maureen Tyra has been tasked with helping to ensure that all of our clients and their families are well-equipped for aging in place. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 20 years of experience in care coordination and program development, Maureen is uniquely prepared to help our clients navigate the challenges that often arise with aging.
Since Maureen will get to know you and your family should you become a client,
we thought that it would only be fair for you to get to know Maureen a little better. Here are a few things you should know about her:
She Has A Background in Psychology and Social Work
Maureen, who is originally from Minnesota, received her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and went on to earn a Master’s of Social Work. She started her career working with adolescents with substance abuse issues, adults with mental health issues, and high-risk moms struggling with their mental health postpartum. After taking a break to have children, Maureen eventually returned to work as a social worker for a hospital in Minnesota, where she was first introduced to the concept of planning for end-of-life care.
“I was working with hospice care and palliative care in 2013, and there was a real focus on helping patients with advance careplanning. I was really drawn to the concept,” says Maureen. “I went on to become the full-time advance careplanning administrator and implemented a system-wide program to address patient care needs.”
Part of Maureen’s goal was to start educating patients as young as 18-years-old about their care options.
“I became very passionate about the fact that everyone over the age of 18 needs to thoughtfully choose their care agent, and think about what they would want in terms of care,” Maureen says. “End-of-life care becomes less scary if we start the conversation earlier.”
Sunny L.A. Brings New Opportunity
In 2017, Maureen decided to relocate to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter who had recently moved there. She began working at California Hospital Medical Center in downtown L.A. as a social work supervisor, before being hired by Tandem Careplanning in 2019.
“Tandem really merges all of the things I love,” says Maureen. “I get to inform patients about their options and provide them with resources, help clients navigate the transition between independence and dependence, and enjoy the highest quality of life as they age in place. It’s a real honor to be able to do that!”
With Maureen’s children scattered across the globe, she understood how the sprawl that currently affects so many families has an impact on care solutions.
“Families no longer live close to one another or have the time to care for aging loved ones,” Maureen says. “We have to be realistic about our limitations so that we can make better, more proactive decisions about our aging care.”
The Tandem Careplanning Difference
“I’m so excited to be at such a cutting edge company that wants to harness technology to solve a human problem that affects so many,” says Maureen. “The Tandem vision of what care can be, and the energy and enthusiasm of everyone who works here is truly inspiring. We all want to make this the best experience for everyone involved, especially our clients and their families. It’s so gratifying to feel like I’m doing good and doing right by people everyday.”
